Enterprise Episode Guide - Season One Episode: 3
Fight or Flight
Mission Date: May 6th 2151
Two weeks after Enterprise NX-01 was given the green light to proceed on its mission of exploration, the crew made a first contact that raised the question of whether humans should put themselves in peril to help others. The starship encountered an alien vessel adrift in interstellar space and stopped to investigate. An away team boarded the vessel and found the alien crew dead and hung on hooks, their fluids being drained by hydraulic machines. Concluding that the perpetrators of this attack will likely return, Captain Archer ordered Enterprise to resume course, but later reconsidered and decided to come back and find a way to contact the victims' people.

The crew set out to repair and decipher the aliens' communications equipment, and the ship's doctor, Phlox performed an autopsy on one of the corpses, but their efforts were interrupted when a vessel with a power signature matching that of the perpetrators' machinery approached and opened fire, damaging Enterprise. Return fire was ineffective against the other ship's superior defenses. The crew was then probed with a bio-scan, apparently with the intention of determining if their bodies contained any fluids of interest to the hostile aliens. The enemy ship prepared to drill through the hull and board Enterprise, but then another vessel manned by the same species as the victimized crew dropped out of warp and hailed Enterprise, apparently in response to Ensign Hoshi Sato's earlier distress call. Communication problems caused the alien captain to think the humans were responsible for the murders, but eventually Sato, using her linguistic skills, convinced him of their friendly intentions, and he began attacks on the other vessel. The combined weaponry of the two ships was successful in destroying the hostile vessel.

The Enterprise crew then helped their new allies, called the Axanar, recover their dead crewmen and return them to their planet before resuming course.
