Enterprise Episode Guide - Season One Episode: 5
Unexpected
Mission Date: June 2151
Continuing to make history with every light-year, Enterprise made a first contact that led to an embarrassing first for humanity. Enterprise NX-01 began experiencing a spate of odd malfunctions that the crew later determined was caused by the presence of a cloaked vessel riding between the ship's nacelles, surreptitiously feeding off the starship's plasma exhaust. Upon contact Captain Archer realized the aliens, called Xyrillians, were friendly and needed assistance repairing their engines, so he dispatched Commander Tucker to lend his engineering expertise. After a difficult acclimation period, Tucker was able to adjust to the unusually exotic environment and work with the Xyrillian engineer, a female named Ah'len, to restore their teraphasic coils. During a break from the repairs, Ah'len brought Tucker into a holographic chamber where he got to experience a three-dimensional re-creation of the Xyrillian homeworld, and he participated in a telepathic "game" that involved the two of them immersing their hands in a box of glowing granules.

After completing the repairs, Tucker returned to Enterprise and the two ships went their separate ways. Soon after, Tucker began to develop unusual growths on his body — on his left wrist and in his ribs — which Dr. Phlox determined was the result of an impregnation. Tucker was carrying a Xyrillian child, and he realized that Ah'len's "game" must have inadvertently led to a transfer of genetic material. Tucker was only a host for the fetus, not the father, but he became the first recorded instance of a human male getting pregnant. Archer set out to find the Xyrillians in order to turn the child over to them, and after more than a week their warp signature was detected near a Klingon battle cruiser. Apparently, the Xyrillian ship malfunctioned again and they were hiding in the Klingons' plasma wake, creating the same problems for them as for Enterprise earlier. Archer informed the Klingons of the situation, and they threatened to kill the Xyrillian crew, but Tucker convinced the Klingons to spare their lives in exchange for them sharing their holographic technology. The embryo was removed from Tucker so it could be transferred to a more appropriate host, with apologies from Ah'len.
