Now that humanity has joined the wider galactic community, involvement in interstellar politics and conflicts proves to be unavoidable. This became the case when Captain Archer decided on a whim to take the opportunity to visit an ancient Vulcan monastery called P'Jem, occupied by monks engaged in "Kolinahr," the purging of emotion. Accompanied by T'Pol and Commander Tucker, Archer tried his best to follow proper protocols during this visit, but could sense his presence was not welcome. He discovered he had stumbled into an incident involving the Vulcans' militaristic rivals, the Andorians. A group of Andorian commandos had taken over the monastery, accusing the Vulcans of hiding a long-range sensor array there that they were using to spy upon the Andorians' world.
Archer, Tucker and T'Pol were taken hostage by the Andorians, under threat of death if the Enterprise crew were to intervene. But thanks to an old transmitter kept in the underground catacombs, Tucker was able to communicate with the ship and coordinate a rescue plan. Lt. Reed and a weapons team transported to the surface in an attempt to overtake the Andorians. A firefight ensued that led into the Reliquary, where the temple's most sacred artifacts were kept, and among the chaos Archer discovered the entryway to a massive complex of sophisticated surveillance equipment — the very sensor array the Andorians were looking for. Archer ordered T'Pol to take pictures of the station with her scanner and hand it over to the Andorian leader, Shran, as evidence of a treaty violation by the Vulcans. She complied, and Enterprise then allowed the Andorians safe passage off the planet, uncertain of what the consequences might be.
