Human ethics were put to the test when Enterprise found itself at odds with a fellow Earth ship. Admiral Forrest dispatched Captain Archer's crew to respond to a distress call from the Y-Class cargo freighter Fortunate, and when the badly damaged freighter did not respond to hails, Archer and an away team boarded the vessel. They were met by the ship's acting commander, first officer Matthew Ryan, who informed Archer the Fortunate was attacked by Nausicaan pirates, but the distress call was actually a mistake. Ryan was initially hesitant to accept Archer's help, but he agreed to let the Enterprise crew upgrade his ship's defenses and allow Dr. Phlox to treat the injured Captain Keene.
During the repair effort, Sub-commander T'Pol detected the bio-signs of an injured Nausicaan aboard the cargo ship. Archer confronted Ryan about this, and he confessed to keeping a prisoner. When Archer insisted upon seeing the Nausicaan, Ryan tricked him and several Enterprise crewmen into a cargo module which he then detached from the freighter with a hull breach. The Fortunate then fired upon Enterprise, damaging its long-range sensors, and jumped to warp. After rescuing the crewmen and repairing the sensors, the Enterprise crew set out to track the renegade freighter, which they assumed was after revenge against the Nausicaans for the many attacks and thefts they had inflicted. Enterprise detected weapons fire and intercepted the Fortunate at an asteroid, where the freighter was engaged in battle with the pirates. Archer talked to one of the Nausicaan captains, and agreed to deliver the prisoner in exchange for letting the Fortunate go. Archer appealed to Ryan to give up his hostage, but he refused until Ensign Mayweather — with whom he shared a bond as a fellow "space boomer" — chastised Ryan for putting all other freighter crews at risk to satisfy his thirst for vengeance. Ryan gave in and released the hostage, and the Nausicaan ships retreated. Ryan was later stripped of his rank by Captain Keene.
