Enterprise Episode Guide - Season One Episode: 18
Rogue Planet
Encounters with exotic new alien species highlighted the Enterprise's investigation of a "rogue" planet, one that does not orbit a star. When the ship picked up a power signature on the surface, an away team headed down to the planet. There, they encountered the Eska, alien hunters who venture to the rogue planet every year. Interested in learning more about their hunting technology, Lt. Reed requested permission to join them.
Later, while the rest of the away team was sleeping, Archer encountered an oddly familiar woman, who knew him by name. Before he could ask her what she wanted, she vanished, and when he informed everyone of the incident, they all believed the captain imagined the whole thing. The next day, Reed went out on the hunt, and Archer had two more encounters with the mysterious woman, who asked for his help. Finally, Archer was able to ascertain her true nature — she is a telepathic shape-shifter, and her kind are hunted by the Eska for sport. The Eska admitted as much later — and added that these shape-shifters, which they referred to as "wraiths," emit a chemical signature when they're afraid. The modified Eska scanners were able to detect that signature.
Outraged, Archer returned to Enterprise, determined to somehow stop the Eska. Sub-commander T'Pol expressed concern, saying that the crew had no right to get involved. Archer, however, was determined to at least "level the playing field" for the wraiths — he asked Dr. Phlox to come up with a way to mask the shape-shifters' chemical signatures. The doctor was successful, and the wraiths were saved from the Eska — at least for the time being. Archer also realized why the woman seemed so familiar to him — she was his image of a character in a Yeats poem he loved as a child.
