Enterprise Episode Guide - Season One Episode: 22
Vox Solis
In exploring such a vast region of space, Enterprise must go through the trial and error of first contact as they encounter new alien species. The crew experienced two particularly difficult — and inextricably linked — first contact situations on this mission, which pushed Ensign Sato's linguistic skills to the limit.
First off, the crew somehow offended an alien species known as the Kreetassans, and Sato had a difficult time properly deciphering the aliens' complex language. As the Kreetassans departed Enterprise in a huff, Sato noticed strange frequency distortions coming from the com system. Later, Crewman Kelly discovered Crewman Rostov in the clutches of a strange, tentacled creature in Launch Bay Two. Captain Archer, Commander Tucker, Lt. Reed and a security officer headed out to investigate, and found both Kelly and Rostov entangled — and immobilized — by the creature's tendrils. The creature also managed to capture Archer, Tucker and the security officer, but Reed escaped just in time, and severed a small tentacle when he closed the door.
The remaining crew deduced that the creature must have come from the Kreetassan ship. While Ensign Mayweather worked to find the ship, Dr. Phlox analyzed the severed tendril. Phlox noted that the creature is highly photo-sensitive, and a sustained burst of EM radiation could potentially stun it. Reed attempted this, but then Phlox discovered something else — the organism was absorbing the crewmen's nervous systems into its own. Any more damage to the organism might have resulted in the death of Enterprise officers. With time running out, T'Pol asked Sato to try communicating with the creature. Meanwhile, Mayweather located the Kreetassan ship and was informed of the crew's faux pas — the Kreetassans consider eating in public disgusting. After apologizing profusely, Mayweather obtained the coordinates for the mysterious creature's homeworld.
After puzzling through the creature's complex language, with assistance from T'Pol, Sato finally managed to decipher some of it. A team consisting of Sato, T'Pol, Phlox and Reed entered the launch bay with an experimental forcefield in place, and Sato attempted communication with the creature via the universal translator. Despite some initial difficulty, it worked — Sato was able to inform the creature that Enterprise would take it home. The organism released the officers, and an away team delivered it to its homeworld.
