An encounter with a mysterious Vulcan ambassador once again led Captain Archer to question the level of trust between humans and Vulcans. In the end, however, he learned the validity of placing his faith in his officers — particularly Sub-commander T'Pol.
Enterprise was sent to retrieve a Vulcan ambassador requiring immediate extradition from the planet Mazar, and deliver her to a nearby Vulcan vessel. Once they reached Mazar, an official informed Archer that the ambassador, named V'Lar, was being expelled from the planet for criminal misconduct. He did not, however, reveal any further details. Once V'Lar came aboard, she surprised the crew with her friendly manner. T'Pol, who had long admired the ambassador, wondered why V'Lar was making no discernable attempt to defend herself against the charges. The ambassador, however, refused to explain the situation any further. Later, the Mazarites hailed Enterprise, requesting that V'Lar be returned to them for further questioning. Archer attempted to stall for time, but the Mazarite ship attacked. After barely escaping, Archer demanded an explanation from V'Lar, but she refused to reveal the details of her situation. Determined to act in the best interests of his crew, Archer ordered Ensign Mayweather to lay in a course for the Mazarite ship, in order to drop the ambassador off.
Later, T'Pol approached Archer. After discussing the situation further with V'Lar, T'Pol was convinced that Enterprise should not return the ambassador to the Mazarites. T'Pol was still unsure as to the details of the ambassador's plight, but Archer trusted his science officer's instincts, and set a course for the Vulcan ship. The Mazarite ships attacked almost immediately, and Archer was forced to push Enterprise to its limit in order to stay out of the Mazarites' weapons range.
Finally, Ambassador V'Lar confessed the truth of her mission — she infiltrated the Mazarite government in order to gain evidence against corrupt officials. Her reputation was intentionally sullied so that the corrupt Mazarites would not see her as a credible witness. As Enterprise was in grave danger from the Mazarite vessels, V'Lar offered to surrender herself. Archer, however, managed to come up with a ruse, telling the Mazarites that V'Lar was injured and in critical condition. The ploy bought time — soon, the Vulcans showed up, and the Mazarites were forced to leave. V'Lar bid Archer and T'Pol farewell, and noted that she sensed a great bond between them.
