The various Federation vessels in use, has displayed different registry codes for ships with different functions. Here are the known codes.

NCC	Starfleet vessel in active service.
NX	Starfleet prototype vessel, and the first in it's class. When the testing is finished, the ship is reclassified as NCC.
NAR	Non-Starfleet science or research vessel.
NDT	Non-Starfleet transport vessel.
NFT	Non-Starfleet. Possibly a transport vessel.
NGL	Non-Starfleet freighter.
NSP	Vulcan science or research vessel.
ECS	Pre-Federation Earth Cargo Ship.
NCV	Federation time ship.
