A graduate of the Starfleet Academy in 2354, this descendant of Native Americans, the ancient Rubber Tree People, went on to serve in Starfleet, since he refused to accept his people's way of life. During his years in Starfleet he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and worked himself up to be assigned as an instructor in Starfleet's Advanced Tactical Training.

In 2370, when his home world became part of the Demilitarized Zone, as of the Federation / Cardassian peace treaty of the same year, and under the threat from Cardassia, he placed his people's well-being above his own, and joined the Maquis. Inevitable becoming an outlaw, he waged a terrorist campaign against the Cardassians, until his starship was spirited to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker on Stardate 48315.6.

Today Chakotay looks to his spiritual background for inner comfort, and he does not mind sharing that belief with others. To achieve complete comfort, he uses a spirit guide summoned by his medicine bundle, and prays to speak with his father for guidance.

Chakotay was very close to ex-Ensign Seska, a fellow Maquis member, until they found her to be a Cardassian spy and a traitor, surgically altered to look like a Bajoran. She was caught selling replicator technology to the Kazon Collective, whom she allied herself with and finally joined on Stardate 48658.2. Skeska died on Stardate 50032.7 during a failed attempt to steal the U.S.S. Voyager.

He now serves as First Officer aboard the Starship U.S.S. Voyager, which was presumed to be lost in the Badlands near the space station Deep Space Nine on Stardate 48315.6, but this was proven incorrect when contact was established with the ship via an alien communication network.

1st appeared in Star Trek on Stardate 48315.6, in Star Trek: Voyager, Caretaker.
