The Emergency Medical Holographic Program AK-1, usually referred to as the Doctor, is only a supplement to the medical staff in case of emergencies, and designed only as a temporarily supplement in the event that they were overloaded or incapacitated. But, due to the loss of the U.S.S. Voyager's entire medical personnel on Stardate 48315.6, when the "Caretaker's" displacement wave transported the U.S.S. Voyager from the Badlands in the Alpha Quadrant to the Delta Quadrant some 70.000 light years away, the Doctor has had to take over the role as Chief Medical Officer aboard the Federation starship.

Designed and programmed with information from over 2.000 medical reference sources, taken from among 3.000 cultures, the Doctor contains the personal experience of forty seven individual medical officers, which makes him a genius when it comes to medicine. He is also programmed with over five million possible treatments with contingency options and adaptive programs, and he is providing himself to be an extremely capable and efficient officer.

The Doctor's program was developed on the Holographic Research Center at Jupiter Station under the direction of Dr. Lewis Zimmerman, whom the doctor's image is modeled after, and he was first activated on Stardate 48308.2.

In the beginning the doctor was treated like nothing more than a tri-corder by the crew, but was later on treated and trusted as a very important officer. He is also a bit sarcastic, making him more of a person than he, or any of the others realize - with the possible exception of the now departed Kes.

The first thing the Doctor states upon activation is usually "Please state the nature of the medical emergency", and initiation is automatic when the ship enters Red Alert. In addition, the Doctor is usually set for high magnetic cohesion, but he can be lessened to a mere image when he chooses to.

Previous to Stardate 50312.5, the crew was transported back in time to the year 1996 by Captain Braxton and his 29th century Time-ship Aeon, and there they acquired a self-powered armband mobile holographic emitter, that enables the Doctor to leave the confines of the Sickbay, and walk freely among the rest of the crew.

He now serves as a full time doctor aboard the U.S.S. Voyager, which was presumed to be lost in the Badlands near the space station Deep Space Nine on Stardate 48315.6, but this was proven incorrect when contact was established with the ship via an alien communication network.
