Kes was born on the devastated Ocampa homeworld, in the Caretaker's underground haven, and her father, Benarem, was one of the great figures in her life, but he died when she was only one year old, and without his encouragement, Kes would never have left the Ocampa city.

She first met the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager, when she was rescued by them from Kazon imprisonment.

In keeping with her people, the peaceful Ocampa, Kes has a very gentle demeanour about herself. But, unlike most of them, she is a free thinker and has a daring streak, which led her to reach the surface of her planet, and escaping her subterranean home. She is also very sensitive and mildly empathic.

Although she appears as a twenty-year-old in human years, Kes is actually only two, because the Ocampa live for only nine years, but in compensation they are capable of quickly absorbing huge quantities of information and knowledge.

Kes had already begun to develop her telepathic abilities while studying Vulcan mental disciplines with Lt. Tuvok, and at the same time pursuing a full-fledged medical training course with the Doctor. Her medical training had advanced so far that she could handle away team medical duties before her departure, which was a welcome relief for the doctor.

Following contact with the race known as Species 8472, Kes began to exhibit extremely elevated serotonin levels, which was a start of her radical evolutionary process. Kes started to destabilize at the molecular level, and eventually she became a being seemingly comprised of pure energy.

Kes left Voyager at the time of her de-stabilization because she was becoming a danger to the ship, but imparted a final gift to the crew - she propelled the ship 9.500 light years towards home, completely circumventing Borg space.

Before her departure, she served as a hydroponic expert and a nurse aboard the U.S.S. Voyager, which was presumed to be lost in the Badlands near the space station Deep Space Nine on Stardate 48315.6, but this was proven incorrect when contact was established with the ship via an alien communication network.

1st appeared in Star Trek on Stardate 48315.6, in Star Trek: Voyager, Caretaker.
