Lieutenant Junior Grade Thomas Eugene Paris began a brilliant career as a pilot with Starfleet, but made a mistake which cost the lives of three of his fellow officers at Caldrik Prime. Although he owned up, he was court marshalled and cashiered. Realising he had disappointed his father, a Starfleet admiral, he bitterly turned to the Maquis as a mercenary, only to be captured on his first mission, and sentenced to the Federation Penal Settlement on Earth, near Auckland, New Zealand, and wearing an alarm anklet.
Capt. Janeway sprang him from the penitentiary, when she needed his expertise and his knowledge of the Maquis in 2371, and he was reinstated as an observer and a scout. Under the fair command of Capt. Janeway, and their enforced circumstances, the good in the man and his brilliance as a pilot have resurfaced.
Tom Paris comes from a distinguished family of Starfleet Officers, and in his youth his father constantly annoyed him with speeches about how great the Prime Directive is, and then later forced him to go to the Starfleet Academy. He barely managed to graduate from Starfleet Academy after a stormy four years, and almost failing stellar cartography altogether as a freshman. He did though, hone his natural aptitude for piloting skills on craft large and small, and proved quite adept at holo-engineering.
He has also revealed an unsatisfying relationship with women that has fostered no long-term associations. In addition, he also has an affinity for antique Earth ground vehicles and Terran American history and culture, especially of the 20th century, and he has enjoyed sailing in true life and in holo-programs.
Lieutenant Tom Paris has also become the first person to ever break the Warp 10 barrier, although the end result was not very pleasing, for humans.
He now serves as CONN officer aboard the U.S.S. Voyager, which was presumed to be lost in the Badlands near the space station Deep Space Nine on Stardate 48315.6, but this was proven incorrect when contact was established with the ship via an alien communication network.
