Lieutenant Commander Tuvok graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2293, and then went on to serve as junior science officer aboard the U.S.S. Excelsior under the command of Capt. Hikaru Sulu, where he stayed on until he resigned his commission in 2298. He then returned to the Vulcan homeworld where he taught archery science at the Vulcan Institute for Defensive Arts, until he, in 2243, returned to Starfleet, and was assigned to the U.S.S. Wyoming. He was later assigned as a teacher and cadet trainer at Starfleet Academy for 16 years, until he joined the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager in 2371.

His Vulcan logic renders him an excellent tactician, and, combined with his intelligence, provides him with unparalleled powers of deduction. His vulcan approach to problems can sometimes cause him to be overly pedantic in his explanations, but nonetheless, Capt. Janeway has come to depend upon his steadfast nature and sound advice. True to his Vulcan nature, his demeanour remains composed, no matter how disastrous or disappointing the situation becomes for the U.S.S. Voyager and her crew. Thus his presence has a calming effect on his fellow officers.

Tuvok was born on Vulcan in 2264, and married T'Pel in 2304, with whom he has four children - three sons and one daughter. He is a devoted parent and husband, and he engages his interest in the traditional Vulcan lute, playing it for his children when they could not fall asleep at bedtime.

He is also an expert botanist, with growing orchids a specialty he continues in his own quarters. In addition he practices the Keethara meditation routine, he plays the Vulcan game kal-toh, and maintaines a scholarly interest in the study of violence. He does not participate in social functions or dine with fellow crew members, but rather prefers to just simply read on his own.

He now serves as the Tactical / Security Officer on the Starship U.S.S. Voyager, which was presumed to be lost in the Badlands near the space station Deep Space Nine on Stardate 48315.6, but this was proven incorrect when contact was established with the ship via an alien communication network.
